Monday, May 18 2009 — TROY, NY
The Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO) celebrated its annual Community Action Day. The day featured luncheon speaker New York State Secretary of State Lorraine A. Cortés-Vázquez and a special ceremony honoring key community partners and customers, a number of who shared heartfelt stories portraying their strength, courage and resiliency.
The ceremony was followed by CEO’s “Spring Fling” Block Party, where a crowd of more than 500 gathered at CEO’s Stepping Stones One to enjoy food, music, prizes and lots of fun. This year’s Spring Fling also served as a kick-off event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Stepping Stones One opening its doors as a Family Resource and Head Start Center.
“While I take great pride in the daily achievement and determination of the CEO staff, we couldn’t do what we do without the guidance of our Board of Directors and the support of our Community Partners,” said Karen Gordon, CEO’s Executive Director. “With their support and guidance, CEO is able to serve as a catalyst to mobilize resources that enable low-income residents attain the necessary skills, knowledge, motivation and opportunities to become self-reliant.”
Ten CEO customers who have improved their lives through education and resources were honored, as was former CEO Board member, John Hedley for his support throughout the decades and for his time spent on CEO’s Board of Directors.
Also honored were the following CEO Community Partners for their time, commitment and support of CEO and the residents of Rensselaer County:
