MANY PUBLIC OFFICIALS ON HAND FOR YOUTHBUILD GROUNDBREAKING EVENT

CSBG ARRA Funds Helping to Build Lives and Homes

Tuesday, August 25 2009 — TROY, NY

Troy, N.Y. – The Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO)’s Executive Director Karen Gordon was joined by New York Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez; US Congressman Paul Tonko; NY Senator Roy McDonald; NY Assemblymen Ron Canestrari; Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino, Troy City Council President Clem Campana and Hudson Valley Community College President Andrew Matonak and many other state and local officials for the Groundbreaking of CEO’s latest YouthBuild home.   The YouthBuild Program is receiving $360,000 in Community Service Block Grant ARRA funding, which is administered by the Department of State, and will provide 72 at-risk youth who have dropped out of school with the opportunity to complete their high school education, learn construction and leadership skills and give back to their community by building a home for a low-income family.

CEO has been providing opportunity for local youth through their YouthBuild Program for over ten years, and for the first time will be incorporating “green” technologies in order to build a more energy efficient home.  Through partnerships with Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) and Newport Ventures Inc, CEO will also incorporate “Green technology” and the new home will be certified by the Home Energy Ratings Program which means it will meet the minimum criteria for energy efficiency standards and save the homeowner thousands of dollars in heating and utility costs throughout the years.  The students participating in this class will be trained in green technology giving them an advantage for job placement upon graduating from the program. CEO will also provide additional employment skills along with job placement counseling services after the students graduate from the program.
