PROGRAM
Former High School Dropouts Experience Success
and Have Plan for the Future
TROY, NY – MAY 23, 2007 – The Commission
on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO)
has honored thirteen young men and women who recently completed
the eight-month YouthBuild program. YouthBuild provides young
adults between the ages of 16 – 24 who have dropped out
of school with the opportunity to work toward their GED while
learning job skills by building affordable housing for homeless
and low-income people. Strong emphasis is placed on leadership
development and community service.CEO, an independent, non-profit
organization delivering a wide range of human services to families
and individuals in need, has provided a YouthBuild Program since
1998.
“Without YouthBuild, these thirteen young people we honored
today would not have a future nearly as bright, nor would they
be preparing to begin productive, self-sufficient lives as contributing
members of our society,” said Karen Gordon, CEO’s
Executive Director. “Furthermore,
because of their hard work and effort these past eight months,
a low-income family in our community will soon have a new house,
a home they perhaps could never have afforded without YouthBuild.
That’s quite a return on our investment!”
Keynote speaker Lonnie Palmer, Troy City Schools Superintendent,
expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the YouthBuild students,
and praised them for their commitment and perseverance. He
also thanked CEO for its contributions to the community and the
school district. “CEO's contributions
cannot be overstated,” Palmer said. “They
provide the programs, services and support systems that empower
people and families in need to create better lives for themselves.”Palmer
also noted that plans are now underway to expand the districts
programs with CEO. |
