CEO RECOGNIZES NATIONAL WEATHERIZATION DAY

Significant Energy Savings to Those in Need

OCTOBER 30, 2007 —  Troy, N. Y.  In 2006, more than 13 million households-in-poverty nationwide spent an average of 25 percent of their annual income on energy bills just to maintain modest usage. New Yorkers carried the highest energy burden, with households at-or-below federal poverty guidelines spending an average of 26 percent of their annual income on energy costs.

In recognition of National Weatherization Day (October 30), the Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO) is reminding the public of its local weatherization services that can result in significant savings in energy costs to those most in need. "CEO's services provide home owners and renters with information on saving both energy and money through "state-of-the-art" energy auditing equipment used to evaluate a home's energy efficiency," said Karen Gordon, executive director of CEO.

CEO's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), a federally funded program through the United States Department of Energy, offers valuable information and solutions to low-income families struggling with the high costs of heat and electricity.  It provides funding to organizations such as CEO to assist the families in identifying and rectifying problems in their home that are causing high energy bills.

Since the program began in 1976, millions of homes across the nation have been weatherized.  In Rensselaer County alone, more than 4,000 homes have received services. In 2008, CEO expects to weatherize another 100 homes. These households will save hundreds of dollars annually on their energy bills once the weatherization work is completed.  The financial savings alone makes a tremendous difference to low-income families, but weatherization services also provide a warmer, cooler and safer home for the families.
